Lesson: Use Filter views in Google Sheets
Learn how to use Filter view in Google Sheets and its variations.
Why use Filtered views in Google Sheets?
Analysing data tables can be a tedious task. Using filters, you can look at data of your choice, thereby making data analysis easier. However, if you change the filter parameters, a new filtered dataset will appear, and the previously filtered data will disappear. You can save filtered data in a filtered view and can move on to make more filtered views and store the previously made filtered datasets.
How to use Filter view?
Step 1: Select your dataset
- Open Google Sheets.
- Press Ctrl + A (Windows) or Cmd + A (Mac) to select the dataset.
Step 2: Go to Data –> Filter Views –> Create Filter View
- Navigate to the Data button in the menu toolbar.
- Select Filter Views → Create new filter view.
Step 3: Filter dataset and Create a New Filter View
- Filter the dataset as per your requirement.
- Here, I am choosing to look at data where Quarter=Q1.
- The output is all rows where Quarter=Q1. We name this view Filter 1.
- Now, let’s create another filter view.
- Navigate to the Data button in the menu toolbar.
- Select Filter Views → Create new filter view.
- Make sure that the range is the same as you had previously selected.
- Now create a filter as per your requirement.
- Here, I am choosing to look at data where Region=India.
- The output is all rows where Region=India, irrespective of other parameters. We name this view Filter 2.
- If you now go to Data → Filter Views → Create new filter view, you can see that Filter 1 and Filter 2 are available in the Filter menu.
- You can navigate between these views, or create new views, as per convenience.
